Monensin and protein supplements on methane production and rumen protozoa in bovine fed low quality forage

چکیده
This study aimed at evaluating the effect of sodium monensin and protein supplementation in the enteric methane production and the population of ruminal protozoa in bovine fed Brachiaria brizantha Marandu cultivar hay. The treatments were: mineralized salt, mineralized salt with monensin, proteinenriched salt and protein-enriched salt with monensin. The experimental outline was in a 4 x 4 Latin square. The protein supplementation increased the dry matter intake and the total concentrations of rumen ciliate protozoa. Monensin eliminated the rumen fauna and reduced the methane production. Methane production was 19.13; 15.73; 24.35 and 11.52 g/kg of ingested DM when mineralized salt, mineralized salt with monensin, protein-enriched salt and protein-enriched salt with monensin were supplied, respectively. The association between the inputs allows for a reduction in the methane production without a reduction in dry matter intake.

work evaluating nutritional mitigation strategies. However, much of this work has been conducted on a small scale using intensive techniques such as respiration chambers or head boxes. Therefore, a method of gas collection and analysis was developed to allow evaluation of methane emissions by a large number of growing cattle under conditions that more closely mimic a production setting. The obj...
متن کاملMonensin and Nisin Affect Rumen Fermentation and Microbiota Differently In Vitro
Nisin, a bacteriocin, is a potential alternative to antibiotics to modulate rumen fermentation. However, little is known about its impacts on rumen microbes. This study evaluated the effects of nisin (1 and 5 μM) on in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics, microbiota, and select groups of rumen microbes in comparison with monensin (5 μM), one of the most commonly used ionophores in ruminant...

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of diet and monensin on performance, digestibility, and methane production in steers fed forage-based diets. In Exp. 1, 72 individually fed steers (300 ± 25 kg) were used in a randomized block design arranged as 2 separate 2 × 2 factorials with two common treatments, thus 6 diets were fed with 12 steers per treatment. Factors included hig...

Rumen is a persistent and specific ecosystem consists of bacteria, protozoa and fungus where feed fermentation takes place in it. Produced Hydrogen in rumen can be used in the synthesis of the volatile fatty acids and the microbial protein and its excess would be eliminated through the production of Methane by methanogenesis. Nutritionists have tried to find ways to decrease loss and energy and...
